parking lot safety tips
Most of us use parking lots or garages in our daily lives, whether it’s at the mall, the gym or even at work. It’s something we do without giving it any thought. Here are 4 tips to keep you safe when parking.
Watch
Avoid talking on or looking at your phone while walking through a parking lot, and have you keys out & ready before you walk to your car. Make sure you can hear what’s going on around you. Listen for vehicles or pedestrians approaching. Look for a parking space close to the destination you’re going to and ensure it’s well lit, especially if you’re parking at night. Park as close as possible to buildings, it’s typically the most populated area of a parking lot and may offer the best lighting as you walk to or from your car.
Hide
Hide your valuables. Smash-and-grab thieves are casual opportunists who see something they like, so they break in and take it. It’s a good idea to remove valuables from your vehicle, especially if they’re visible through a window. If you can’t remove valuables, it’s a good idea to hide them from sight, or lock them in the trunk. Never leave these things on your seats, dashboard or floor:
• Purse or wallet
• GPS
• Phone
• Laptops (or its empty bag)
• Backpacks
• Shopping bags
• Cash (even coins)
Lock
You should always close your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and keep your car keys with you at all times. When you return to your vehicle take a good look around, inside, and behind the vehicle before you unlock the doors. Once you enter your vehicle, promptly lock all doors and keep windows up until you’ve exited the parking lot or garage.
Report
Remember, if you happen to notice any suspicious activity while in a parking lot, you should report it immediately to your local authorities.
